To honor Martin Luther King's legacy of service, WEC's employees teamed up for some community service of our own on Jan. 16, partnering with Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a family that is a member of WEC, the Campbell family in Cottonwood.
Is there a greater way to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. than by serving our fellow man? On Sunday, May 7, 1967, Dr. King preached a sermon entitled "We Would See Jesus" that included these words “ . . . anybody can serve, you don’t have to be rich to serve. You don’t have to have a lot of education to serve humanity. You don’t have to have a beautiful home to serve humanity. Everybody can be included here, and that’s what I like about it. The doors of greatness are opened at all times, because anybody can serve.”
Not only we were able to honor the legacy of a great American, we were able to fulfill one of Wiregrass Electric Cooperative’s core values, commitment to community.
Habitat for Humanity’s new home construction program partners with low income families to provide affordable housing. The families qualifying for homes are required to provide “sweat equity” by working on the homes of other families while waiting for their home - seven years for the Campbells. The Campbell family was not given the home, but they paid a down payment and must repay Habitat for Humanity for the home. The money received from that repayment will be used to build another home for another family.
I would like to personally thank each and every employee -- and our board president -- who participated in our first Community Service Day. I have talked a lot about Wiregrass Excellence with our employees -- which stands for "together W.E. achieve". I think we saw Wiregrass Excellence in action on Monday!
